Correction of Prominent or Deformed Ears
- 6 October 2019
What is the importance of ear shape in facial aesthetics?
While the ears with a normal size and anatomy do not capture attention, deformed ears immediately become a point of interest at first glance.
What is a prominent ear?
Normally, the angle between the ear cartilage axis and the temporal skull is between 20 – 30 degrees. On the other hand, the ear has an internal flexion angle of 90 degrees. If one or both of these angles are wider than normal, the ear seems more pronounced from both back and front. This is the basis of prominent ear deformity.
At what earliest age can the prominent ears be corrected?
Prominent ear correction operations can be performed on anyone after 7 years of age.
How are the prominent ears corrected?
To correct prominent ears, an incision is made to the posterior aspect of the ear, and permanent sutures are placed between the skull and ear cartilage. This operation is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, and generally does not demand hospital stay.
How long does the operation take? When can I get back to work/school/daily life?
It takes between 1-2 hours to perform bilateral prominent ear correction. Operation site should be protected with a bandage 24/7 for a week following surgery. Going back to normal Daily life is allowed afterwards.
I live outside the city/country. How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?
Do I need to wear a bandage after surgery? For how long?
The operation site is protected with external bands 24/7 for the following week. After first week, the bandage should only be used at night for two more weeks.
