Rhinoplasty Swelling Stages

Within the recent years, it has been getting easier and easier to have a smooth  recovery process for a rhinoplasty surgery. Through the new rhinoplasty  techniques, the nose is recieving less trauma which helps accelerating the  healing process. Let’s see below how the healing stages go.

Day 1: Right after the surgery, you will wake with a case on your nose, there will  be inner splints inside your nose and a cast over your nose. You might not be  able to breathe through the nose. Most of the time, you won’t be feeling any pain  but if you do, it might be like a light headache or your teeth might hurt a bit. You  will spend that first night after the rhinoplasty surgery at the hospital. The next  day, your surgeon will come, see how you are doing and discharge you. Your  nose might bleed and this is totally normal and expected. You will be invited to the  clinic for your 3rd post operational check up. But until then,

  • You are recommended to stay indoors.
  • Sleep or lay on your back on a slight elevated position.
  • Take your medications as recommended.

Day 3: The silicone splints from inside your nose are removed on the 3rd post op  surgery day. Once the splints are out, the inner canals have more space to swell,  so even after the splints are removed, you might still not be able to breathe. You  will notice that your face is more swollen than the 1st post op surgery day. This is because, the face starts to swell up. Generally, after the 5th day, the facial  swelling will start to decrease.

  • You will be given a nasal spray to wash your nose, you will be guided on how to  use it.
  • You will continue to sleep on your back and lay a bit elevated without turning to  your sides.
  • If you will be going out, do not forget to wear sunscreen and caps.

Day 7: The cast over your nose will be removed. You will get to see the very  swollen version of yourself. Your facial swelling will be much better by the time  you reach day 7. But, nasal swelling will continue. You might still feel blockage on  your nose. You might have a bit of bruising on your face depending on your skin  type. Some patient’s facial bruising wears off around day 5, sometimes it can go  up to day 10. You can wear make up, but no facials until 1 month of healing  process is completed.

Week 2: On the second week post rhinoplasty surgery, the facial swelling and bruising would be completely gone.(Of course depending from case to case.) Any  gym activities are still restricted. Also, you should not wear glasses or sleep on  your sides. Your nose might still look unsettled and swelled. This is going to take  some time for your new nose to get used to such adjustment. Your nose might  feel oily, this is due to the cast covering the nose for 7 days, you can gently cleanse the nose.

Week 4: Once 1 month of healing process is completed, you can start turning to  your sides while sleeping. You can also start with easy cardio exercises, but no  weight lifting. Jogging, walking, pilates and yoga are completely fine. You will start  to see that your nose looks more settled and not so much up in the air. You might still have numbness in some parts of the nose and do not forget the fact that, the  look you see in the mirror is not the final result, you might have a bump on your  nose or sometimes experience weird feelings, these are all normal and are  temporary. It is no longer restricted to get facials. Swimming is also allowed.

2 Months: You can start wearing sunglasses now and return back to your normal  sport acitivites like running, cardio etc. You will notice your nose looking less  swelled from the 1st month. Remember, eventhough slower, your nose is still  healing.

6 Months: Halfway through the healing process, the changes taking place from now on will be subtle. You will be close to having your final results but of course the change will continue.

12 Months: The final results should be complete however, if you have thick skin, the healing process unfortunately has to continue because in thick skin cases, the swelling takes longer to go down. Of course, during your face to face consultation  you will be able to discuss everything in detail with your surgeon and your  surgeon will be giving you the complete guide of the healing process.
